EPA, Geneva - People protest in front of a wall of photos of victims of the 1988 Massacre of political prisoners in Iran during an exhibition at the Palais des Nations in front of the United Nations (UN) European Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, 15 September 2017. The shoes with flowers represent the victims of the mass execution. In the summer of 1988, some 30,000 Iranian political prisoners were massacred in a matter of a few months on the basis of a fatwa issued by Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. Human rights organizations and jurists are demanding the UN to conduct an independent international investigation of the 1988 massacre.
